Following his transfer from Bristol City in the summer, the 24-year-old was sidelined by a bout of glandular fever only seven games into his Wycombe career. He played twice after recovering from the illness, before suffering an ankle ligament and tendon injury in training.

Burnell opened the scoring in the specially arranged friendly and could now be in contention for a starting place in the first team that travels to Swansea City on Saturday.

"I've got half a season to put things right and I can't wait to get started. I haven't played for John Gorman yet so it's a clean slate and I've got to go out and impress him," he said.
