Claridge debut inspires fightback

Steve Claridge, the club’s penultimate loan signing this season permitted by League rules, started up front at the expense of Ian Stonebridge.

Gorman pointed out he wasn’t going to give up on the former Plymouth forward altogether. Stonebridge has only scored twice this season, and Gorman felt that Claridge’s arrival was a good opportunity to rest the faultering striker. The last time he was dropped from the starting XI, additional effort in training won Stonebridge his place back the following week, and he even popped up with a decisive strike.

"Ian does a lot of good things for the team. His play is intelligent - the only thing that is missing from his game is goals," said Gorman.

Gorman believes Claridge’s experience can benefit all the strikers at the club. Signed on an initial one-month loan from Brentford, he partnered leading goalscorer Nathan Tyson up front at Swansea.

"I thought he was superb today. He set a great example to the younger players by constantly running or working hard for the team. He is just what we need because he also scores goals off the little scraps in the box which we have not been doing lately," he said afterwards.
