Mooney moves on

Last updated : 04 July 2007 By Chairboy
Earlier this week we heard the news that veteran striker Tommy Mooney, has left Wycombe after failing to agree terms on a new deal. This comes as a huge suprise to all fans at Wycombe after Mooney himself said it would be "just a case of sitting down and ironing out the details". It seems this is no longer the case for the veteran journey man as he leaves the club after 2 years and a years service as captain. Mooney was welcomed by excited blues fans in August 2005 when he introduced himself with what can only be described as a wonder goal against Carlisle on his full debut. That season he carried on his goal supplying and goalscoring tallies and added another 19 to his account after admitting it wasnt enough due to him being the main focal point in the attacks to provide for pacy striker Nathan Tyson who later move onto Notts Forest. Mooney was rewarded for a great season by being offered the captains armband for the first time in his career for the 2006/2007 season. He trelished this opportunity and really rallied the troops, he led by example in the famous cup run all the way to the semi fiansl against the premier league champions Chelsea. Although after the cup exploits the whole teams form dipped and Mooney could only add 1 goal to the Wycombe goals for column in 2007 and finished the year with a disapointing 13 goals, although his partner up front Jermaine Easter benefitted and went on to have the best scoring record of his career for a season. It was widely expected afters Tommy's comments he would sign on the line after being offered a deal by Steve Hayes, but it seems he would prefer to find a new club as a free agent than fight in line for a strikers spot with the influx of players Paul Lambert has bought to the club this season. In a way the decision can be understood given the fact he is ageing a first team football will be tough, but to say he would sign a deal for certain then back out seems a far cry from a man who also said he wanted to see how the club would strengthen and when they did, he felt the did too much and walked away. Wanderers mad would like to unofficially tip the new place for Mooney to see out his playing days and rumours have been heard amongst the Wycombe fans that Notts County and Brentford lead the race for the experienced hitman. Whereever Tommy ends up though we would like to thank him for the two years he gve us and hope everything pans out well for him in the eve of his illustrious career that has seen him embrace al levels of the english game.
