Stockport edged closer to play-off rivals Wycombe thanks to this convincing 2-0 victory at Edgeley Park.

Five wins from their last six games means Jim Gannon's side are now in fine fettle.

The battle of seventh versus sixth in League Two saw a cagey opening spell, but on nine minutes Stockport's Jason Taylor went close when his arrowing low drive was superbly palmed round the post by keeper Ricardo Batista.

From the resultant corner-kick Anthony Pilkington ghosted in at the far post but headed into the side-netting.

Tommy Mooney had Wycombe's first chance on 17 minutes when he volleyed straight into the grateful arms of Wayne Hennessey, but just three minutes later it was Stockport who deservedly went in front with the simplest of goals. Stephen Gleeson's inswinging corner was met by the unmarked Anthony Elding, and he headed home convincingly for his second goal in as many games.

Elding tried his luck again, this time from distance, but his shot went wide.

Stockport were well on top as the interval approached, with Pilkington next to go close on 32 minutes when his half-volley flew a couple of feet wide.

Elding was tormenting the Wycombe back line with his power and guile, and he was denied a second goal only by a brave block by Anthony Grant. Seconds later the ex-Boston striker teed up Adam Proudlock, but his close-range effort was superbly saved by Batista.

The visitors had the last chance of the opening period when Mooney curled a shot just over the crossbar.

Wycombe made a triple switch at the break, but within a minute of the restart they found themselves two goals down. David Poole crossed from the right and there was Gleeson who could scarcely miss from six yards.

Elding ought to have made it three just seconds later when he blasted wide, but Mooney was then unlucky at the other end when his low drive fizzed inches past the far post.

Two Stockport subs combined well on 76 minutes when Adam Griffin played in Tes Bramble, but the big front-man screwed a disappointing shot wide.
