Guppy heads to America

He leaves the club sitting one point above mid table with eleven games of the campaign remaining.

"It’s a big blow for us but at the same time it was to be expected," said Chairboys boss John Gorman.

Guppy, who stated his intention to end his playing career in USA all along, had agreed to play one game as a favour to Keith Ryan when Gorman’s assistant was caretaker manager back in November.

By the time the club had appointed Gorman, the new boss successfully negotiated a pay as you play contract with Guppy. Only on-loan striker Adam Birchall had chosen to go back to Arsenal, by the time Tony Adams successor was named the following month.

Guppy struck up a good understanding on the left with another of Adams loan signings – the impressive Tony Craig. The young left back was forced into returning to Millwall at the end of January but is now staking his claim for a regular first team place at the New Den after a three-month spell at the Causeway.

The club has also managed to sign Steve Claridge since then - Guppy and Claridge were both England internationals and former teammates at Leicester City under ex-Chairboys manager Martin O’Neill in 1997.

Guppy established himself at Wycombe back in the early 90’s, but more than ten years later fans will still be sad to see him leave.
