Kirk in the teeth

After Roger Johnson had missed training with a back injury for most of the week, John Gorman stuck by his captain in his crusade to alter as much of the groundwork as possible that former manager Tony Adams had done to lift Wycombe back out of League Two.

Adams walked away from Wycombe without as much as an explanation. At least his successor had the decency to hold his hands up, following his side’s fifth home defeat of the season.

"I’m very angry about the goals we lost. Maybe playing Roger backfired. He’s so gutsy and always wants to play even when he’s not fit. Sometimes football kicks you in the teeth and in the end he wasn’t himself because of the injury and that’s not an excuse, it’s just a fact," said Gorman.

Johnson was responsible for the mistakes that cost the goals, and veteran Steve Claridge spurned several opportunities to get Wycombe back in the game, to Gorman’s disappointment.

Wycombe were in discussions to make Claridge’s one-month loan from Brentford a permanent switch. A new deal for the 38-year-old would free up another loan signing for the club, giving Gorman the option of two more freebies before the end of the season.
