Phillips added to England U-19s

Wycombe Wanderers Matt Phillips has been called up to the England Under-19 squad for their European Championship elite-round qualification in Ukraine.The 19-year-old winger will replace Manchester City midfielder Alex Nimely, who has withdrawn through injury.

Phillips is a product of Wycombe's youth set-up and has made 74 appearances for the League One side.

Wycombe boss Gary Waddock said: "Hopefully this will be the start of a promising international career."

He added: "It's brilliant news both for Matty and the club.

"We all know Matt's got potential and this will give him great confidence."

The Wanderers' boss continued: "We have to work together to make sure he fulfils his potential."

Phillips becomes the first Wanderers' player to represent England at a professional level while on the books at Adams Park, excluding loanees.

England will be playing three games in Ukraine at the end of May, facing the Republic of Ireland, Bosnia-Hercegovina and Ukraine in group three.

The winners of each group will progress to the eight-team European Under-19 Championship final tournament in France in July.
