Senda spares Wycombe's blushes

Wycombe again needed to recover from a slow start to rescue a point against one of the league’s struggling clubs.

Keith Ryan, Wycombe’s saviour seven days earlier, took much of the credit for the home side only finding themselves a goal behind at half time. He took care of his defensive responsibilities admirably although the central midfielder picked up a yellow card for two meaty challenges, both inside a minute of each other.

Ian Stonebridge had a shot comfortably saved by Shrewsbury keeper Scott Howie, and Stuart Nethercott’s close-range header from a set piece was Wycombe’s only other threat before the break.

Tony Adams’ latest pairing in attack was grateful of some improved service in the second half.

Adam Birchall had a shot from distance sail over the bar, before a poacher’s goal by the Wales international was disallowed for offside on the hour mark. Danny Senda, who began his Wycombe career as a full-back, started to get forward himself but his long range effort was too high to trouble Howie.

Relief for Wycombe fans arrived in the 73rd minute, when Tyson’s dangerous cross from the left was met by a well-timed run by Senda. Tyson’s weighted delivery was forced into the roof of the net as Senda recorded his third goal of the season.

Wycombe searched for a winner but despite Senda and Tyson both testing Howie with deep corners in the final ten minutes, a second consecutive draw and a run of no wins at home since August was the inevitable conclusion to a disappointing afternoon.

"We had 17 attempts at goal compared to nine at Cheltenham and the majority of those came in the second half. I don’t think I’ve seen us play that badly in the first half in my time here. It’s not good enough. We’re becoming tough to beat but we’ve got to improve on performances," said Adams.

Wycombe were drawn against in form League Two opponents Swansea City in the second round of the LDV Vans Trophy. The tie will be played at the Causeway Stadium in the week commencing 1st November.
