Stonebridge overcomes fear factor

In his first full week back in charge, one in which the club took four points from two away fixtures, Gorman's first decision was to drop attacking wideman Ian Stonebridge for the midweek draw at Bury.

"I thought he needed a kick up the backside but in training afterwards he showed a terrific response, so I realised I had to find a place for him in the team for Saturday," said Gorman.

Stonebridge, signed from Plymouth in the summer then scored what was only his second goal of the season, his first since the Chairboys 1-1 draw at Northampton on August 14th.

"We battered Notts in the second half and could have won by more as we looked like we had goals in us," said Gorman.

As if by leaving Stonebridge to sweat it out among the substitutes, while Nathan Tyson continued to prove to everyone he was back on the goal trail, wasn’t enough, Gorman also invited Plymouth utility man Blair Sturrock for a week's trial at the Causeway. Sturrock had previously played in wide positions for the Pilgrims as well as his favoured role up front and has recently had unsuccessful loan spells with lower league clubs.

"Sturrock played in a behind closed-doors game for Wycombe last week and John Gorman has told me that he is not the type of player they are looking for at the moment," offered Plymouth manager Bobby Williamson.

Meanwhile, Norwich City right-back Keith Briggs and midfielder Tero Karhu from Mypa of the Finnish league, were new trialists at the club this week.
