Colchester United took an early lead but could not capitalize against their basement visitors Wycombe Wanderers.

Striker Craig Fagan converted a penalty after only eight minutes to put the U's in the driving seat.

It was Fagan who was fouled in the first place. The Birmingham City loanee scampered onto a precise pass from strike partner Rowan Vine, and he was clearly tripped by defender Roger Johnson.

Fagan picked himself up to convert the spot-kick and chalk up his sixth goal of the season.

Yet Colchester could not find a second goal and it was Wycombe who dominated the last hour.

Wanderers were level in the 38th minute when skipper Michael Simpson was in a perfect place to head home a cross delivered by Danny Senda from the right flank.

In fact the visitors could even have been ahead before half time. A long ball forward from Matt Bloomfield deceived defender Alan White, giving striker Nathan Tyson a clear site of goal. Yet Tyson aimed his shot too close to keeper Simon Brown, who made a good block.

The second half was a drab affair. Home manager Phil Parkinson tried to inject some life into his side by making a double substitution, with 13-goal striker Wayne Andrews and midfielder Thomas Pinault given a chance to shine.

Andrews fired into the side netting within three minutes of his appearance while Frenchman Pinault blazed narrowly over the bar in stoppage time.

Wycombe had very few chances, but they will be content with a point, although they have not won an away match for a year.

Chairboys boss Tony Adams admitted: "We were atrocious for the first 20 minutes. In fact, I had us down for a three or four-goal thrashing.

"But we started to play towards the end of the first half and in the end I thought we outplayed Colchester, who are one of the better footballing teams in this division."
