Battling Wycombe were denied three precious points by Hartlepool keeper Jim Provett in their 1-1 draw at Adams Park.

The 19-year-old kept out of sorts Hartlepool in the game with a handful of spectacular saves in each half. Steve Brown and Gavin Holligan were both foiled twice when goals seemed certain as the keeper threw himself around his area.

There was a shock for the home side after only two minutes when Wycombe took the lead with their first attack. Darren Currie fired in low from the right after everybody in the middle had missed a cross from the other side.

And with Wanderers well on top, they were only prevented from increasing their lead by some great saves by Provett, his third even earning a clap from Brown, whose shot looked a certain goal.

Hartlepool clawed their way back into the game and on 39 minutes they were level when skipper Mickey Barron's low 25-yarder sneaked through a crowded area and into the net off the post.

In the second half, Provett was just as sharp as he had been earlier, while at the other end there were escapes for Wycombe, too.

Defender Andy Thomson was lucky referee Martin Atkinson didn't spot him handling a shot from Mark Tinkler only yards from the official, while Michael Nelson had a goal bound header cleared off the line by the busy Brown.

Wycombe caretaker manager John Gorman was delighted with his players, and said: "It's a good result, and it might have been better.

"Their goalkeeper was outstanding, but we did well to come back after their scrappy equaliser and in the second half we had enough chances to win the game." Hartlepool boss Neale Cooper said: "It was a poor performance. We gave the ball away far too much and never played our football as we can.

"Our keeper was brilliant, but that's what we've come to expect from him. I've never seen a better one for his age."
