A holiday thriller exploded deep in injury time leaving veteran managers Brian Horton and John Gorman squaring up to each other in a frantic touch line exchange. Leading from the fifth minute through a stunning 25-yard-shot from midfield man Danny Whitaker, Macclesfield were crestfallen when Wycombe equalised in the dying moments. John Gorman leapt out of his touchline box to punch the air as Roger Johnson's 20-yard-strike deflected past the stranded Steve Wilson.

But with seconds left in injury time, Alan Navarro pounced for the Cheshire side to stoke home from 18 yards.

That was the cue for Horton to exaggerate his celebrating, thumping the air and gyrating on the side line. Macclesfield should have sealed the game in the first half as they squandered a succession of chances. In the thirteenth minute Paul Harsley forced a magnificent save from Frank Talia, but for Matthew Tipton's woeful finishing from six yards Macclesfield could have sealed the points sooner. It was the same story for Mike Sheron who poked inches wide moments before the break. Wycombe were a different team after the break with Stephen Cooke the unluckiest player as he saw a 15-yard snap-shop rattle the inside of the post and bounce back over the goal line. Clint Easton then went close with a speculative volley only for the game to come to its dramatic conclusion at the death.
