Notts County were within 30 seconds of laying their Wycombe hoodoo when they surrendered a late equaliser.

County had not beaten Wycombe since October 1999 but deservedly went ahead with just under an hour played and it was a brilliant goal.

Defending deep in his own half, striker Mark Stallard, an ex Wycombe player beat the visitors offside trap with a long-range clearance. Dutchman Marcel Cas sped away from pursuing defenders and hit a glorious shot low into the net.

The game had needed a goal, particlarly in a lack-lustre first half when there were no fewer than 24 stoppages for free-kicks.

The second 45 minutes were played at a far higher tempo and County had a great chance to double their advantage soon after Cas had scored.

Ian Baraclough, from inside the six-yard box, did not even trouble Wycombe keeper Martin Taylor with a header that flew over the bar.

The goal and the miss all came during County's best spell in the match but gradually Wycome gained the initiative again thanks to the skill and industry of midfielder Darren Currie.

It was fitting that Currie should lay on the equaliser when his cross from the left picked out the Wycombe debutant Craig Faulconbridge who headed in at the back post.

Notts manager Billy Dearden was fuming afterwards both about the equaliser and about the fact that Notts are under a second transfer embargo in six months. It has been slapped on because Notts have given severence pay to five players who have left the club and Dearden hopes that what he called a fiasco will be sorted out during the week
