Wycombe Wanderers earned a penalty shootout victory to put Second Division leaders Plymouth out of the LDV Vans Trophy.

Jermaine McSporran had shocked Argyle with two goals inside the first 15 minutes.

They were pegged back before half-time by strikes from Graham Coughlan and Micky Evans, but held on for the remaining 75 minutes, despite having centre-back Guy Branston sent off in the break between the full-time whistle and the start of extra-time for something he said to referee Brian Curson.

Outgoing caretaker manager John Gorman was so incensed by the dismissal that he was banished to the stands for arguing with Curson.

Michael Simpson, Chris Vinnicombe, Dannie Bulman and Danny Senda all converted spot-kicks for Wycombe, while Nathan Lowndes and David Friio had their kicks for Argyle saved by Frank Talia, rendering successful strikes by Paul Wotton and Tony Capaldi meaningless.
