Blades hot on the heels of Owls

Will Hoskins' debut goal helped Sheffield United to a 3-0 win over Wycombe as Danny Wilson's side moved up to third place in League One.

Substitute Hoskins pounced in the 66th minute, five minutes after replacing Richard Creswell, before Ched Evans and Kevin McDonald sealed the points to leave the Blades just one behind Sheffield Wednesday with two games in hand over their city rivals.

After an opening period of dominance from the promotion-chasing home side, Wycombe top scorer Stuart Beavon fired narrowly wide of the upright after 15 minutes before McDonald saw a right-footed drive fly inches wide of a post at the other end.

Evans had a golden chance to put the hosts ahead within five minutes of the restart but the usually reliable striker smashed Matt Lowton's throughball the wrong side of the right post.

Hoskins then replaced Cresswell and the Brighton loanee made an immediate impact, reacting quickest to Michael Doyle's ball into the box to slot underneath Nikki Bull.

The Blades doubled their advantage seven minutes later when leading scorer Evans swivelled and fired into the bottom right-hand corner.

And Scottish midfielder McDonald completed the scoring with a 25-yard deflected drive in added time.
