Assombalonga sinks Chairboys

Britt Assombalonga's early goal handed Southend their first win of the season as Wycombe were beaten 1-0 at Roots Hall.

The Shrimpers took the lead in the seventh minute when Kevan Hurst's corner from the left was headed goalwards by Ryan Cresswell and although Matt Spring cleared off the line, Assombalonga nodded the ball in from eight yards for his second goal of the season.

Blues maintained the upper hand with John Spicer, Anthony Straker and Ryan Creswell all going close. Wycombe striker Dennis Oli shot wide early on, but the Chairboys struggled to get going in the first half.

It was a different story after half-time as they played with more purpose, with Spring shooting over from long range and Cresswell blocking a Joel Grant effort.

Nicky Bull denied Southend midfielder John Spicer at the other end as the home side went in search of a second goal.

Wycombe boss Gary Waddock brought on Jo Kuffour and Gareth Ainsworth to try to force the issue, but Southend should have doubled their advantage in stoppage time when Assombalonga fired wide.
