Promising young striker Neil Ross and leading hitman Luke Beckett were on target for Stockport County as they deservedly took the points at home to Wycombe Wanderers.

Beckett grabbed his 14th of the season and set up Ross half an hour later as the Hatters registered a much-needed win.

Wycombe hit back through substitute Roger Johnson, who timed his run to perfection to fire home a Lewis Cook corner in the 87th minute, but it was not enough for the Chairboys despite a dramatic finish to the game which saw Lee Jones save brilliantly from Johnson.

It was Stockport who started the brighter of the two sides and they duly got their just rewards when Sheffield-born Beckett stole behind WycombeÂ’s defence to slot home after ten minutes for his 14th goal of the season.

Left-winger Keith Briggs came close just moments later as the home tried to extend their advantage, but his rasping drive from outside the penalty area flew agonisingly wide of the target.

Beckett should have made it 2-0 to County after being set free by a clever flick from striking partner Ross, making his first league appearance of the season for the Hatters. But BeckettÂ’s shot was splendidly saved by Wycombe keeper Martin Taylor.

Wycombe came close to levelling matters on 32 minutes, but County keeper Jones produced a superb one-handed stop to turn Keith RyanÂ’s left-footed strike around the post.

County doubled their lead six minutes before the interval when Ross, the promising 20-year-old striker, slid in to score inside the six-yard box after a lovely throughball from Beckett.

Wycombe had few chances to get back in the game, but when they did County keeper Lee Jones was up to the test to deny the visitors.

But it was no surprise when the home side came close to scoring again through Beckett and left-winger Briggs in the second half.

Luckily, Taylor, who had a superb game for Wycombe, was on hand to make keep the scoreline from becoming anymore embarrassing against opponents, who sat four places below in the table at the start of the afternoon.

But the Chairboys did pull a goal back to set up a nerve-wracking finish to the game. Cook's corner was met sweetly by substitute Johnson with three minutes remaining, but County held on for an important victory
