Tony Adams was happy with his first point since taking over as manager of Wycombe, but admitted there was a long way to go.

He explained: "We are trying to lay down basic football principles and it will take time.

"I'd prefer to be playing out on the pitch but his is the next best thing." Wrexham manager Denis Smith was disappointed after his side missed a penalty that may have changed the game and brought Wycombe out of their defensive mode.

"If you miss your chances it will cost you," he said. "Looking on the positive side we have kept another clean sheet and Wycombe didn't create too many problems for us.

"You need two teams to make an attractive game and you're not going to get it if one side isn't willing to come out and attack." The vital penalty miss came early in the second half after Scott Marshall shoved Hector Sam as the Wrexham striker went up for a cross from Carlos Edwards.

Sam hit the spot-kick hard and low but Wycombe keeper Frank Talia guessed right as he dived left and made a superb save.

Minutes later he made another great stop to block a 40-yard piledriver from Carlos Edwards.

The first 20 minutes was a bore until Wycombe made their first raid and home keeper Andy Dibble made his first save, holding Darren Currie's shot from the edge of the area.

Steve Brown then missed a good opening, lofting a wild shot over the Wrexham crossbar.

The visitors had another chance when Jermaine McSporran crossed from the left and Stuart Roberts came in with a close-range shot at the back post, but Andy Dibble made a reflex save.

Minutes later Brown crashed a 20-yard drive against the Wrexham woodwork and with time running out Wrexham went with three strikers, but the Chairboys held on for the draw.
