Championship chasing Wigan maintained their position at the summit of Division Two with a hard fought 2-0 victory at Wycombe, thanks to goals from Lee McCulloch and Andy Liddell.

Latics came out of the blocks really quickly and took the lead on ten minutes.

A short corner routine was worked on the Wigan right and Gary Teale's cross was deftly headed in by Scottish under-21 international McCulloch for his fifth goal of the season.

The home side responded well to going behind and squandered a golden chance to equalise when defender Roger Johnson headed down a free kick, but fellow defender Andy Thompson shot weakly from eight yards allowing John Filan to gather easily.

The visitors seemed content to defend their early lead, but allowed Stuart Roberts to get behind their defence - although he delayed his shot and the chance was lost.

Latics continued to look dangerous every time they attacked and midfielder Jimmy Bullard scuffing a good chance wide with five minutes of the first half remaining.

Inspired by manager Lawrie Sanchez the home team came out strongly in the second half.

Jermaine McSporran, creating havoc with his pace, created a chance for Craig Faulconbridge which he squandered.

The best chance of the second half fell to home substitute Lewis Cook, who having played a one-two with Faulconbridge shot wide with the goal at his mercy.

Wigan wrapped the game up with two minutes left when McSporran hauled down Stephen McMillan in the area and referee Paul Rejer pointed to the spot.

Liddell easily beat Wycombe goalkeeper Frank Talia from the spot and the visiting fans could then celebrate another three points.
