Nicholls nixes Chairboys challenge

Substitute Alex Nicholls struck nine minutes from time to rescue Walsall a point and deny fellow strugglers Wycombe their first win in four games with a 1-1 draw.

The Chairboys headed into the match off the back of six losses in seven games but looked to have done enough to take all three points when Ben Strevens scored three minutes after coming off the bench.

But the 31-year-old striker went from hero to villain when his loose pass was intercepted by Nicholls who rounded goalkeeper Nikki Bull to grab Walsall a point.

Wycombe's top scorer Stuart Beavon almost added to his tally for the season twice in the first half, narrowly missing Kadeem Harris' dangerous cross before shooting straight at Saddlers goalkeeper Jimmy Walker.

Half-time substitute Strevens made no such error when he fired Wanderers in front on 49 minutes from Beavon's inswinging right-wing cross.

Only Andy Butler's last-ditch clearance thwarted Harris from doubling the home side's advantage, and the block proved crucial when Nicholls kept his cool in the 81st minute to earn a deserved draw.
