Wycombe Wanderers won their first opening game since 1994, beating Stockport County 1-0.

A bright start in searing heat with temperatures reaching 110 degrees saw the visitors gain two corners that the Chairboys did well to defend.

On 16 minutes the game came to life when Luke Beckett fed Aaron Wilbraham who looked set to score. Football League debutant Steve Williams was down quickly to make a first-class save.

From his long ball Jermaine McSporran raced clear to cross for another new boy Charlie Mapes to put Wanderers in front.

Another chance arrived ten minutes later when Mark Rogers slammed over from six yards after a Michael Simpson free-kick.

A slick move on 44 minutes involving McSporran had Nick Colgan scrambling in goal.

Williams saved his side right on the stroke of half time with the save of the match when he turned a Beckett piledriver round the post.

Wycombe had a great chance right at the start of the second half when a Richard Harris snapshot was saved by Colgan.

The Hatters put a lot of effort into the second half, but found Wycombe hard to break down and could not find a way back into the game.
