Wycombe Wanderers sank to new depths with a 2-0 defeat at home to Rushden & Diamonds.

A brace from Rodney Jack ensured the three points on the visitors' inaugural visit to the Causeway Stadium.

Rushden started strongly and took the lead just four minutes in, former Crewe hit man Jack played a delightful one-two with John Dempster and Jack finished with aplomb.

The home side rallied after this disastrous start with long range efforts from Charlie Mapes and Jermaine Mcsporran, but it was Rushden who doubled their tally on 35 minutes.

Blues keeper Steve William came too far out of his goal and failed to clear his lines. Jack punished his rush of blood in the best possible way, as he lobbed the ball in from 25 yards.

Ex-Arsenal colleagues Tony Adams and Brian Talbot both made substitutions in the second half due to the large number of games recently, and in Adams' case in an attempt to liven up his beleaguered troops.

One home substitute, Dannie Bulman flashed a couple of shots from 20 yards which fizzed wide as Rushden seemed content to sit tight, their two goal lead safely intact.

The Chairboys had the better of the possession in the second period as they sought unsuccessfully to make inroads into the visitors' advantage.

After their very good win against Bournemouth the previous week, this was a very poor performance by the home side, and the five thousand plus home fans deserved to feel aggrieved at the result.
