Wycombe Wanderers suffered a Boxing Day hangover as they slipped to their first defeat under the stewardship of former England assistant manager John Gorman, being beaten 1-0 by a skilful Southend outfit.

The game had survived a 2pm pitch inspection and despite the obviously frosty conditions Southend dominated for the majority of the game.

The only goal came on 27 minutes, Freddy Eastwood taking advantage of a slip by Wycombe defender Roger Johnson and firing past the despairing Frank Talia in the home goal.

Although the Chairboys huffed and puffed for the remainder of the game and also hit the woodwork twice thanks to the ability of Craig Faulconbridge an equaliser was ultimately beyond them and would have been harsh on the visitors.

Talia had kept his side in the game with a couple of outstanding stops notably in the 26th minute as Wayne Gray burst through the static home defence only for Talia to bravely dive at the feet of the marauding frontman.

Wycombe assistant manager Steve Brown had said before the game that the Christmas present he wanted most of all was for his new charges to stay unbeaten during the Christmas period, but the superior skill in tricky conditions from Southend meant this dream evaporated into the cold Buckinghamshire air.

Wycombe can have no complaints as they created very little against a Southend side who were dangerous on the break as well as comfortable in defence.

Southend also had their chances to increase their lead, Andy Edwards hitting the Wycombe crossbar as the journey around the M25 proved successful for everyone from Essex.
