Wycombe began strongly and dominated the play. But, as in the past, they were not entirely convincing in front of goal and Neil Edwards was in fine form in the Bury goal.

On 35 minutes Ian Stonebridge replaced Joe Burnell for Wycombe and two minutes later Wycombe took the lead. Nathan Tyson drove the ball across the goal and Tom Kennedy cleared off the goal line. From the resulting corner Wycombe captain Roger Johnson drove the ball past Edwards for the lead. More chances followed, but Bury held out until half time.

Wycombe finally got going after a period of play where Bury pressed at the start. Tyson was clean through on 56 minutes but passed the ball at Edwards. Matt Bloomfield won it from Dave Challinor and fed Tommy Mooney who fired well on 61 minutes to extend the lead.

A third goal arrived on 74 minutes when Tyson rolled the ball in after a cross from Stonebridge on the left. It was 4-0 on 80 minutes when Tyson chipped the keeper after being put through by Bloomfield.

The one downer of the afternoon came when Bloomfield was stretchered off following a challenge from Brian Barry-Murphy in the Bury midfield.
